Nimbus kitten
Brittany says: I met Nimbus on March 26, 2009, a few hours after he made his debut in the world. He was born to the neighborhood cat Patches whom I cared for before and after she had her litter of seven kittens. All of them were wonderfully sweet and I loved them very much but couldn’t take one for myself due to already having many other animals. Everything changed the more I got to know little OK as I called him, short for Orange Kitty. Once all his brothers and sisters were gone I was left with this little orange kitten I just couldn’t give up. Obviously I ended up keeping him and giving him his official name of Nimbus.

A few of Nim’s favorite things are sleeping in the sunshine, eating, sleeping some more only in weird positions, trying to sneak people food, loving his people, watching birds, sleeping near the fan on my laptop, playing with paper bags, and hanging out with his friends -- fellow kitty PC, dog Nila and guinea pig Ringo. He loves dog food and birthday cake ice cream no matter how much I scold him for sneaking it. He has an entire basket full of toys but he refuses to play with any except the little furry mice. Those are his favorite! He also enjoys being the focus of my photography. He’s one of my favorite subjects to photograph in the entire world.

It’s fun to think about all the ways Nimbus has grown. He’s the craziest, hungriest, loudest purring, most orange, most skittish, most playful cattiest cat I’ve ever owned in my entire life. Sometimes I question what I was thinking when I decided to keep him when he goes on with his crazy shenanigans like sneaking butter from a tub and jumping at my legs every time I pass by the couch. It’s moments like when I walk through the door and he’s standing there waiting on me that I know why. He is full of love and energy and makes everyone that meets him laugh. He brings chaos as well as joy into my life with everything he does.

Enid kitten
Robin says: My best friend is a vet tech and happened to live in a neighborhood with a lot of stray cats. One day she found our little Enid -- just hours old, laying on the sidewalk. She brought the kitten inside and things did not look good -- we were pretty sure that she was going to die. We did everything we could to save her, giving her fluids, keeping her warm.... and she just kept on hanging on to life. We started giving her around-the-clock care, while also trying to be realistic about her chances of survival. We didn't want to name her because we were trying not to get attached, but of course we fell in love with her. And luckily she survived! Her name is Enid, and she's quite a hellion. (Don't fall for that innocent, cute look she had as a kitten!)

Mushu kitten

Bea says: Mushu was born to a stray cat on September 11, 2008. I rescued her from the streets when she was very little, about eight weeks or so. I already had a dog at home, a Siberian husky named Luna, and I was a little afraid something would happen, but since Luna was pregnant at the time, she accepted Mushu instantly, even nursing her and everything!!!! Mushu is very independent, like all cats, and her favorite thing in the world is to jump!!! She loves to climb on shoulders, like a large furry parrot, and now that she has a new little sister in the house (another stray kitten named Lola) they spend the whole day running from one end of the house to the other. There's no rest in this house. :D

Lyra kitten
Dave says: Lyra is Milo's sister and we adopted them together from the Fife Cat Shelter here in Scotland. Lyra (named after the heroine in Phillip Pullman's His Dark Materials trilogy) is less adventurous than her brother and likes to look after her own smaller territory in our top-floor flat. But like Milo she is very affectionate and likes to be near us. Her favourite thing? Anything on a piece of string. My favourite thing? Coming up with new ideas for how we can best redesign our flat to incorporate the both of them.

Milo kitten
Dave says: When I promised my fiancee a cat for her birthday, I didn't know we'd end up with a pair of them, or that I would be the one who went all gooey and lovestruck upon first meeting them! At any rate, they came home with us from the Fife Cat Shelter when they were about six weeks old, and they've now lived happily with us for just over a year. Neither my wife nor I had owned cats before, but watching these two grow up has been a total pleasure, and I doubt we could cope without them.

Milo, the boy (named after the hero in Norton Juster's The Phantom Tollbooth), is now a very confident explorer of the big wide world. He's very affectionate and can always be relied upon to either get helpfully in the way of whatever we're doing or provide hours of entertainment by simply purring at us. He loves his mouse toy that my wife made. But his favorite thing is the front door.
